«Reporter» has recollected the most significant international competitions of 2009. It turned out to be quite «gold-bearing» for the Russian sportsmen.

The World bandy championship. 18th–25th of January, Vesteros (Sweden).

The Russian hockey players managed to reach the final, but did not manage to defend the world champions' title, having conceded to eternal Sweden competitors — 1:6. The parity remained until the arbitrator told his weighty utterance. The Russian player was sent to the penalty box, and not a minute passed, when the Swedes came forward. Soon they had thrown one more puck, after which Vladimir Yanko's team fell down.

The World snowboard championship. 17th–24th of January. Gangwon (South Korea).

Russian Ekaterina Tudegesheva confirmed a high class, taking «bronze» in a parallel slalom. Once and for all Russia was included into world snowboard elite.

The World biathlon championship. 14th–22nd of February. Pyeongchang (South Korea).

During pursuit, the Norwegian Ole Einar Bjoerndalen roughly broke the rules of competitions, having reduced the distance to more than 100 metres. He was given penalty minute, and as a result he moved from the first place to the third. Russian Maxim Chudov, who honestly finished second, was declared the winner. However in half an hour the International union of biathlonists (IBU) satisfied the appeal against the decision of judicial committee, and the initial results were restored.

The World bobsleighing and skeleton championship. 20th of February – 1st of March. Lake Placid (USA).

The best Russian bobsleist Alexander Zubkov was the second in the four and the third in the pair after first two races. Nevertheless Russians were left without medals, becoming the fourth in both races. «The organizers of the championship resort to cunning to help their own players. Americans»have played ice» — it was normally prepared only for the period of competitions», — Zubkov grieved.

The World figure skating championship. 22nd–29th of March. Los Angeles (USA).

Predictably, Russians could expect medals only in pair figure skating and ice dancing. Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov have won «bronze», and Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin — «gold». The last rehabilitated themselves for their failure in the European championship and were declared the ambassadors of XXII White Olympic Games.

The World ice hockey championship. 24th of April — 10th of May. Bern, Kloten (Switzerland).

In a quarterfinal in stubborn struggle Russians have beaten Byelorussians — 4:3, in a semi-final with the same efforts they have beaten Americans — 3:2, and in the final, first yieldin the score, they have wrested the victory from the Canadians thanks to Oleg Saprykin's and Alexander Radulov's well-aimed throws,— 2:1. It was the 25 th victory of a national team in the World championships.

Champions Basketball Men League (Euroleague). 1st–3rd of May. Berlin (Germany).

CSKA basketball players won prestigious international tournament of the best Europe clubs in 2006 and in 2008. This time they have yielded to Greek «Panathinaikos» only a two-score throw in a dramatic ending — 71:73.

The World water sports championship. 18th of July — 2nd of August. Rome (Italy).

The national team of the Russian swimmers in the championship was represented by the new instructor — 56-year-old Andrey Vorontsov, working in England last years. He has led the team to the third step of a pedestal (20 medals: 8 gold, 8 silver and 4 bronze), having yielded Americans and Chineses. Beyond any praises there was the performance of 17-year-old Yulia Efimova: she has set up a world breast stroke record on a 50 metres distance, having shown unique time — 30,09 seconds.

The World track and field athletics championship. 15th–23rd of August. Berlin (Germany).

The Russian walkers have taken all three «gold». Olga Kaniskina and Valery Borchin have won race walking on 20 km at women and men accordingly, and Sergey Kirdyapkin took the first place in 50 km long distance. One more gold medal for Russia was won by the high jumper Yaroslav Rybakov.

The World boxing championship. 21st of August — 5th of September, Milan (Italy).

The World artiffic gymnastics championshiphas come to an end with triumph of the Russian national team. 19-year-old Evgenia Kanaeva has won sixfirft places from six possible!

8 awards — 2 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze. Arthur Beterbiev and Egor Mehontsev became world champions. The semi-final was reached by 8 Russians, six of them fought in the finale.

The World artistic gymnastics championship. 9th–13th of September. Ise (Japan).

It has come to an end with triumph of the Russian national team. 19-year-old Evgenia Kanaeva from Omsk has won six first places from six possible! She became the world champion in team championship, in all-round and in four separate kinds.

The World fencing championship. 30th of September — 8th of October. Antalya (Turkey).

The Russian national team became the second in the team event after the Italian national team, having won 6 medals — 3 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze. Anton Avdeev and Lyubov Shutova (sword), Aida Shanaeva (rapier) became world champions.

The fourth stage of a «short water» swimming World Cup. 14th–16th of November. Berlin (Germany).

Russians have reached 4 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals. Besides, Evgeny Korotyshkin has set up a world butterfly stroke record on a 100 metres distance — 48,48 seconds. And Arcady Vyatchanin has covered 200 metres distance on a back in a record time of 1.46,11 seconds — it is 0,97 seconds faster, than former achievement of South African George du Rand.

The author's forecast

If everything happen like in the world-2009 championships during the Vancouver Olympic Games-2010, the Russian national team in total event will take the 11th place with 12 medals — 3 gold, 3 silver and 6 bronze. And here are the first three:

The USA — 13 + 3 + 12 = 28 Norway — 11 + 7 + 5 = 23 Germany — 9 + 13 + 4 =2 6. This statistics is resulted without the World championships on curling men, hockey men and women. In case the Russian hockey players would win the Olympic Games in hockey founders homeland, as it was in the world-2008 championship, they would move to the 8th place in the total event. And still we will be optimistic. It is obvious that 2009 was the estimation of forces, the definition of the first Olympic team, and the heads of federations, trainers and sportsmen counted on performances in Canada. We hope, that Russians will perform not worse at least in Vancouver-2010, than in Turin-2006. Then they became the fourth in the total event with 22 medals — 8 gold, 6 silver and 8 bronze, having yielded Germany, the USA, and Austria only.
