Moscow believes in tears

5-6 (2010)

In 2014 Russia will welcome the second Olympic Games in its history. The first took place in 1980 and became, according to experts, the standard of the Olympic ceremonies. Therefore, the answer to a question «what is the example for Sochi Games organizers?» is obvious.

On July, 19th, 2010 — is the 30th anniversary of XXII summer Olympic Games grand opening in Moscow. The IOC decided to spend the first Games in the history of the Eastern Europe on October, 23rd, 1974. Specially for the Games-80 in capital of the USSR there were built 78 objects, including sport center «Olympiysky», rowing channel «Krylatskoye», cycle track «Krylatskoye»and equestrian complex in Bittsevsky park, and also the terminal №2 of Sheremetyevo airport, hotel complex «Izmaylovo», hotels «Kosmos», «Turist» and «Salut», the Olympic village. There was constructed the su-permodern complex including 21 TV — and 72 radio studios, 62 commentary studios in Ostankino. 200 thousand persons were involved in preparation and carrying out of the Games.

Olympic Games-80 were going to welcome record number of participants and visitors. However, engagement of Soviet troops to Afghanistan spoiled the game. On the initiative of a number of the states, political boycott was declared aganist the competitions. Only 81 representatives from 144 IOC member-countries came to Moscow.

The main director of opening and closing ceremonies of the Moscow Olympic Games was Joseph Tumanishvili — Stanislavsky's pupil, the director of many mass entertainment events.

Opening ceremony of the Games held on Lenin stadium and has been sustained in Ancient Greek Dionysia solemn manner. Young men in tunics walked along with amphoras in their hands, others drove the antique chariots harnessed by the four of horses. Girls in the Greek tunics strewed the Olympi-ans's with petals of roses. Olympic Games-80 lasted for 15 days. They were broadcasted in 111 countries. 5748 of sportsmen started. 1245 of judges umpired the competitions. There were 203 complete sets of awards. Sportsmen of 36 countries became prize-winners of the Games. The first team place took the athletes of the USSR performing all program this time, including field hockey. Owners won record number of medals for all history of the Olympic movement —195, 80 of them gold, 69 silver and 46 bronze. During the Moscow Games there were broken 36 world and 74 Olympic records — the achievement, which has not been excelled till now. Grand ceremony of closing of the Olympic Games-80 took place on August, 3rd at «Luzhniki» stadium. The song «Good-bye, Moscow!», written by Aleksandra Pakhmutova and Nikolay Dobronravov and sung by Lev Leshchenko, Tatyana Antsiferova and pop-group «Plamya» was sounding as the curtain fell. After the second couplet huge Misha came up to the center of the stadium, holding on multi-colored balloons. Rocking here and there, it began to rise higher and higher. At parting Misha waved his paw and soon disappeared in the sky. During the song many spectators cried…

Later experts called the Games-1980 the standard of the Olympic ceremonies. None from 9292 dope analyses showed positive result. The IOC did not get any official complaint, any protest. Both cases are unique in modern history of the Olympic movement.

«It is undesirable to fail in 2014»

Tatyana Kazankina, the triple track and field athletics Olympic champion:

— In days of carrying out of the Olympic Games-80, Moscow had pleasantly surprised me: it was very festive and clear. New sports objects were constructed, the old were reconstructed. When the country holds large competitions, sports rise begins in it: people see, what achievements sportsmen can show. It is very good example for youth, for children. Now Russians are impressed by national team failure in Vancouver. It is undesirable to perform like this in Sochi. I wish, that the promised changes do not remain on paper, that sports become accessible, on the one hand, and prestigious on the other hand. However, we have to be ready that the results of Russians in 2014 will not appear better, than in 2010: the reserve created in former years comes to an end. There are few old sportsmen in a national team and we do not know how new sportsmen will perform.

«Sochi is a combination of incompatible»

Vladimir Salnikov, the repeated Olympic champion in swimming:

— We saw global changes in Moscow before the Olympic Games-80. Pavilions were built on waste grounds, the shape of a city changed for all to see. On the one hand, Moscow Olympic experience makes the problem of carrying out of the Games-2014 easier, on the other hand, it imposes additional responsibility. Competitions in Sochi is a combination of incompatible: the sea and mountains, winter and summer. At the same time it is unprecedented world experience. Yes, there are difficulties, but they could be overcome. New sports objects are erected in Sochi, the infrastructure is being developed. It is made for people go in for sports. After all sport is a struggle, a rivalry, which has pure ideals and pure roots. In sport a person achieves absolutely new boundaries. What is more interesting he conquers himself, first of all. I think, sooner or later our children will be satiated with computer games and they will want to go in for real sports, instead of pumping up virtual muscles.
