British are going to hold the «greenest» Olympic Games of the present. They wish the Games left material heritage in all spheres.

«Olympic Reporter» starts a series of publications about preparation of the authorities and inhabitants of the British Isles for XXX summer Olympic Games. We will tell about the main objects of the Games, problems and decisions connected with their building and functioning. The first material from a series is about the infrastructure of the Olympic park of London.

Summer Olympic Games-2012 in London are going to become the «greenest» for all history of modern Olympic Games. Absolutely new standards, aimed at the struggle against climatic changes, the maximum use of harmless transport, a reuse of a waste will be applied at building of the Olympic objects and infrastructure.

Habitation

The Olympic village of London, according to the declared concept, will consist of 11 complexes, which will be located in east part of the city. Now building is in active stage, outlines of buildings, which will be constructed on huge rectangle perimeter are already seen. There will be mainly apartments for sportsmen — participants of the Games, and also the press-center for hundreds of journalists, who will arrive to London from every corner of the world. According to the initial plans, village building should have been financed only at the expense of a private sector. However, in the conditions of financial crisis, private investors don't show interest to this project. Now they demand the guarantees, which authorities don't consider favourable to themselves. As a result, recently the Olympic minister Tessa Jowell declared practical nationalization of the Olympic village. For its completion there will be additionally allocated 324 million pounds from the state treasury. It is supposed that this money will be returned as a result of sale of apartments in village after the Games.

Transport

The authorities of London don't expect serious problems with a municipal transportation for the period of the Olympic Games. In their opinion, considerable number of Londoners traditionally leaves for vacation in July-August, and transport loading reduces for 20%. In average, every day in capital of Great Britain take place 16 million trips by buses and 4 million trips by the underground. Eight millions spectators will be barred from going by cars, they will have to use public transport, bicycles or go on foot. Everybody, who goes for the Olympic Games in London will get special card for visiting of all zones. The plan will concern even those drivers who aren't going to go for the Olympic Games.

Energy

To supply more than 2000 objects with the electric power in territory of the Olympic park is planned first of all with the help of just constructed Olympic power center. During the Games and after them the center will personify adherence of Englishmen to use of renewable energy sources and energy-efficient technologies. Building of the Power center began in August, 2008 and was finished in the end of 2010. To erect the structure of a building 45 meters height it was used about 500 tons of steel, about 3500 sq. meters of concrete «boards» are erected for floor and roof forming. Design decisions for the center are borrowed from world famous London power stations — such, as Tate Modern and Battersea Power Station.

Bridges and tunnels

To lighten communications over the numerous rivers, channels and branch lines, which pass through the Olympic park, there will be constructed 30 new bridges and tunnels. It is planned that during the Games they would be used for transport and people, and after 2012 would make the important part of tourist infrastructure. In the Olympic part of London Englishmen approached building of bridges and tunnels very creatively, having made them real works of art, integrally «having soldered» them in natural landscape and having connected them in a single complex with the other objects. So, one of bridges is simultaneously a roof of the Water center6 which becomes a place of swimming, diving and water polo competitions. The well-known tunnel near Thames becomes one of the main sights of the Games and the main way of the pedestrian and bicycle traffic (organizers advise this kinds of movement to the visitors of the Olympic Games). In 1948 the tunnel under Thames became a part of the London underground. In December, 2010 this line of the underground was closed. It should become longer and be restored. The line should be completely ready by the Olympic Games-2012.

The Olympic Games-2012 in figures

34 platforms will be used for competitions during the London Olympic Games. 10,5 thousand sportsmen will take part in the Olympic Games. 4,2 thousand sportsmen will become the participants of Paralympic Games. 70 thousand volunteers will cater for sports and cultural events. 900 thousand visitors will arrive to the British capital for the period of the Games. 9,5 billion pounds sterling will spend Great Britain for the Olympic Games.
